Beaches & Parks at a Glance

Dilburnu Nature Park: The Pine-Scented Promontory

Extending west from the southern reaches of Nizam Caddesi, Dilburnu Tabiat Parkı (Tongue Point Nature Park) is a narrow 500-meter-long finger of rocky land jutting into the Marmara channel toward Heybeliada. Designated as a protected natural park, this 10.7-hectare sanctuary is blanketed by mature umbrella and Turkish red pine trees that release essential oils into the sea air under the summer sun.

Unlike the commercial resort strips of mainland Istanbul, Dilburnu remains wild and tranquil. Wooden picnic benches are nestled under pine canopies, connected by gently sloping dirt walking paths. Along the northern and southern rocky shores of the point, wooden platforms and iron ladders allow bathers to slip directly into deep, crystalline marine waters.

Curated Beach Clubs & Organized Swimming

For travelers desiring cushioned sun loungers, broad parasols, hot freshwater showers, and seaside restaurant service, Büyükada offers several well-maintained beach clubs:

Family Classic

Yörükali Beach Club (Yörükali Plajı)

Located in a sheltered southwestern cove, Yörükali is Büyükada's most famous historic bathing establishment. The beach features a rare sandy shoreline rather than pebbles, making it exceptionally comfortable for young children and casual waders.

Amenities: Wooden sun decks extending over the water, seaside seafood restaurant serving grilled sea bass and calamari, overnight rental bungalows, and private shuttle boats from the main pier.

Entry Fee (2026): 400 TL weekdays / 650 TL weekends per person (includes sunbed and umbrella).

Quiet & Family-Centric

Nakibey Beach (Nakibey Plajı)

Situated on the eastern shore near Maden, Nakibey has operated since 1984 under a strict "families only" policy (unaccompanied groups of men are barred entry to guarantee a relaxed, safe family ambiance).

Amenities: Golden sand seabed, gentle incline without sharp drop-offs, certified lifeguards, children’s play area, and beachfront food court serving burgers, gözleme, and fresh fruit juices.

Entry Fee (2026): 450 TL weekdays / 750 TL weekends per adult.

Affordable Municipal Facility

Beltur Büyükada Municipal Beach

Operated by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality's hospitality branch (BELTUR), this facility provides modern, clean seaside amenities at regulated municipal rates.

Amenities: Modern sun loungers, clean changing rooms, wheelchair accessible entry ramps, and a BELTUR cafe serving subsidized hot food and beverages.

Entry Fee (2026): 250 TL weekdays / 400 TL weekends via Istanbulkart.

Wild Seclusion & Water Sports

Halik Bay (Halik Koyu Plajı)

Located on the deep southern coast of Büyükada at the foot of steep pine slopes, Halik Bay is the island’s longest natural cove, stretching nearly 400 meters. Surrounded by jagged cliffs and untamed coastal vegetation, it attracts adventurous swimmers, snorkelers, and sea kayakers seeking complete separation from urban crowds.

Amenities: Rustic wooden sunbathing piers built over natural stone ledges, stand-up paddleboard (SUP) and sea kayak rentals (approx. 200–350 TL per hour), and an open-air wooden canteen serving grilled sardines, fresh melon, and Aegean tea.

Access & Entry: Reachable via direct shuttle boat from the main harbor (15 minutes) or a steep foot trail descending from the southern pine forest ridge. Entry fee is approximately 300 TL per person.

Water Quality, Sea Currents & Marine Life

Büyükada is positioned at the confluence of two distinct water masses: the surface brackish current flowing southward from the Black Sea through the Bosphorus, and the deep, dense saline undercurrent flowing north from the Mediterranean through the Dardanelles.

Because the southern and western beaches (such as Yörükali and Dilburnu) face the open expanse of the southern Marmara, strong offshore currents ensure continuous water circulation. Istanbul Provincial Health Directorate technicians test bacteriological samples weekly throughout the swimming season (June 1 through September 30), consistently awarding Büyükada's managed beaches high water quality compliance certificates.
